The Deduction Rule and Linear and Near-Linear Proof Simulations

چکیده
We introduce new proof systems for propositional logic, simple deduction Frege systems, general deduction Frege systems and nested deduction Frege systems, which augment Frege systems with variants of the deduction rule. We give upper bounds on the lengths of proofs in Frege proof systems compared to lengths in these new systems. As applications we give near-linear simulations of the propositional Gentzen sequent calculus and the natural deduction calculus by Frege proofs. The length of a proof is the number of lines (or formulas) in the proof. A general deduction Frege proof system provides at most quadratic speedup over Frege proof systems. A nested deduction Frege proof system provides at most a nearly linear speedup over Frege system where by “nearly linear” is meant the ratio of proof lengths is O(α(n)) where α is the inverse Ackermann function. A nested deduction Frege system can linearly simulate the propositional sequent calculus, the tree-like general deduction Frege calculus, and the natural deduction calculus. Hence a Frege proof system can simulate all those proof systems with proof lengths bounded by O(n · α(n)). Also we show ∗Supported in part by NSF Grant DMS-8902480.

متن کاملA formal framework for specifying sequent calculus proof systems
Intuitionistic logic and intuitionistic type systems are commonly used as frameworks for the specification of natural deduction proof systems. In this paper we show how to use classical linear logic as a logical framework to specify sequent calculus proof systems and to establish some simple consequences of the specified sequent calculus proof systems. In particular, derivability of an inferenc...
متن کاملProof Composition Mechanisms and Their Geometric Interpretation
In this talk, we present a new syntax for Linear Logic, inspired by natural deduction. In the sequent-calculus formulation of this syntax, the leaves of sequent trees can be labelled not only with axioms, but also with assumptions. The usual linear-logic operations of dereliction, contraction and weakening are replaced by a single abstraction operation, which introduces a ?-formula in the concl...
متن کاملPolarized Proof Nets with Cycles and Fixpoints Semantics
Starting from Laurent’s work on Polarized Linear Logic, we define a new polarized linear deduction system which handles recursion. This is achieved by extending the cut-rule, in such a way that iteration unrolling is achieved by cut-elimination. The proof nets counterpart of this extension is obtained by allowing oriented cycles, which had no meaning in usual polarized linear logic. We also fre...
متن کاملDeductive synthesis of recursive plans in linear logic
Linear logic has previously been shown to be suitable for describing and deductively solving planning problems involving conjunction and disjunction. We introduce a recursively deened datatype and a corresponding induction rule, thereby allowing recursive plans to be synthesised. In order to make explicit the relationship between proofs and plans, we enhance the linear logic deduction rules to ...
